about

Looking at your pictures is like looking through butterfly wings"
Jimi Hendrix (about Ira)

This is the only recordings that Ira published during his lifetime.

IRA COHEN
New York poet, photographer, traveler (Ethiopia, India, Japan) born on February the 3rd, 1935 to deaf parents, began developing his vision at one year learning to spell with his fingers. Friend of Brion Gysin, William Burroughs, Paul Bowles, Dante Alighieri. With this shamanic and tantric exercise, he explored the whole spectrum of photography from infrared to black light. Published in 1994 and produced by algerian born dj Cheb i Sabbah (based in San Francisco, he has played with Psychic TV, Lights In A Fat City, formed Tribal Warning Theatre & joined the famous jazz trumpeter Don Cherry for the Moussolou Live Experience).

WELCOME TO THE TRANCE ADVENTURE
Ira Cohen, the Majoon Traveler & his DJ fellow, the ritual music explorer, bring along their aquarian friends: Don Cherry, Ornette Coleman, Bill Laswell, Ed Blackwell, Lights In A Fat City, Joujouka.... The groovy readings are complemented by some traditional Moroccan pieces recorded in Tangier & Marrakesh by Ira Cohen, Paul Bowles & Brion Gysin. For the first time, we can listen to Angus MacLise (he played with John Cale, La Monte Young, Terry Riley...) playing cembalum & other percussion in a rare piece recorded in 1964, a year before his collaboration with the early Velvet Underground.

KATHMANDU DREAM PIECE
Ira reads some of his enlightened lyrical poems on Cheb' subtle ethnic & dancing music mixes: Kathmandu Dream Piece, Tangier Telegram, Tokyo Birdhouse, Letter to Caliban, Imagine Jean Cocteau... The 'guardian angel of the free spirit' (as Julian Beck described his friend Ira) invites the psychedelic forces to a mythic voyage. "At last, we are on the verge of cracking the star language" writes a true poet whose endless dream is to outrun entropy.
